Our week up in Canada was grand indeed. There is a reason while all of the license plates up here read "Beautiful British Columbia" across the top of them (in that place where the state name would be in the States.) We had a K-7 group, with some really smart and fun grade sevens. Our Celia (that's MCT's version of Ariel- or Marina, if you've seen either the Toei Animation film from the seventies or that cartoon series that was on UPN when I was a kid...) this week was absolutely stellar. She had a really lovely voice, and played a dorky, endearing heroine...kind of like our Red back in that glorious week in Colorado... Also the boy who played the merboy next door, her eventual love interest, was a genius. I mean seriously, he knew all of his lines and CUES on Tuesday, word perfect. Oh yeah, and to continue the never-ending soap opera that is my experience working with children, Prince Perfect was her ex-boyfriend. Or maybe her boyfriend again by the end of the week...I can't keep up with these eleven year olds!
We went on a bike tour of the town with Shirnest's homestay, which was really awesome. She brought us over to the ranch that she works at and introduced us to the horses. We also discovered some other horses on our adventure, admired a glacial river from under a graffiti-ridden bridge, attempted to ride our bikes through silt, and check out the wickedest sculptures of animals I've ever seen. On a golf course nonetheless! They were all made out of local metal material...like one of them had a hockey skate for an ear if I recall correctly...Shirnest has some sweet pictures of them. I'll pilfer and post them some day. Maybe I'll even get around to posting the rest of my pictures from summer tour. (I was tempted to end with an ellipsis again, but I refrained)
The show was great. Truthfully, I had funny stories to tell about it, but since I was not updating every day I am now overflowing with cute anecdotes about childhood speech and behavior, and can't think of any of them due to information overload. Hopefully I will actually be able to get online at my own homestay once I am back in the States so I can be more faithful to my blog. But one thing I will share: the starfish costume is the hottest thing I have ever worn in my life. When I had it ripped off me backstage so that I could quickly change back into mom to come out on stage and join in the show's penultimate love song, I actually looked like I had been swimming. Granny's flannel nightie ain't got nothin' on that monster of a costume. Plus you can't hear a thing and your arms get really tired.
Today we were supposed to go horseback riding and spend the night in a teepee. We were even gonna fish for our dinner! But it rained. Nonstop. I mean POURED all day long. It cleared up and we made s'mores out on the porch by the fire of the chiminea after watching two movies and several episodes of "Grey's Anatomy". We're hoping to maybe ride tomorrow morning before we hit the road. And attempt to get back into the States. Wish us luck!
