Well he won. Holy shit he won. I can't swear in front of the kids either and I am usually all for more imaginative and descriptive adjectives but damn. I am rendered dumb and speechless by my elation. I just want to run through the streets banging pots and pans and celebrating the future. I want to rub it in all those stupid redneck conservatives faces that Americans are smarter than them. (which is of course NOT what my president elect would want at all but I am allowed to think it aren't I?)
I don't remember the last time that I was proud to be an American. I am not supposed to say this but I couldn't do anything but laugh and agree with my European and Canadian friends when they mocked Bush's ignorance. I seriously thought to myself today that if that crazy woman from Alaska is in office, I am moving to Canada. I have to. I will request only over seas tours. But now? I want nothing more than to stay in this country.
The future is now. Obama is exactly what this country needs. He is progressive and has a vision. He is just as liberal, and tolerant as one could ever desire. He gracious and motivated only by the desire of the people to make our country a better place. To truly redefine democracy, to make our society one that is truly democratic. It near brings me to tears (as many things do) to think about all of the changes that are going to occur over the next four years.
And what makes me even prouder is that fact that MY generation is a huge part of the reason why Obama won. We want to change the world. Obama speaks to us, we relate to him, and we believe that he will hear our voices and change at least our great and powerful country, if not the world. More people voted in this election than have in years. And it is all because Barack Obama, whether one is for or against him (and our country proved that many MANY more of them were for!) inspires people to action.
Or maybe it's just because Senator McCain shot himself in the foot when he picked crazy lady from Alaska as his running mate.
Tonight one of the pro-McCain children overheard me whispering to my favorite little town crier boy that I was for Obama. And she looked at me in this way that made me realize that what I say really has effect on these kids. She wanted to agree with me. It was one of those moments where I realized how much impact I really am having on these kids lives. Her parents are conservatives and this outspoken liberal girl from CT who is directing her in a show is a major role model for her and so she questions, even for just the briefest moment, the views passed on to her by her parents.
But that's another story. The point is that I have never ever been prouder of my country or my generation. All of my states, Connecticut, Virginia and Montana went democratic. Washington State, where I will be spending my life basically until May has a new, female democratic Governor! We have a wonderful, visionary black man in office and his beautiful, intelligent wife as first lady. We have an older man who compliments the young president elect perfectly as Vice President, and his wife is no slouch either! We are headed towards a world where we will not get involved in wars that we have no place in, where everyone will be able to marry whomever they choose, regardless of gender, where rape victims will have the right to choose whether or not to carry an unintended child to term, where no one will be judged based on their religious views or the color of their skin. I believe in the power of Obama to lead us towards this future of freedom, understanding and tolerance. And I will do everything I can to support him in this quest.
The time of change starts right now. YES WE CAN!
