compensating for something?

Today, a boy asked me why I had such big earrings.  I wasn't quite sure how to respond.  But one of the ADs said "I don't know why I have such big earrings either.  I mean, they are pretty big, for my age."  She was a fifth grader with kind of big hoops in, but I was glad that she thought my big earrings were cool and that she wanted to be like me.

So I think I will wear all of my biggest earrings for the rest of the week and become known for them.
